Description

“Wood on wood, metal on metal.”

This brass plane hammer has a head that is approximately 6.5 ounces and a total weight of nearly 11. The handle is ash. One of the two faces is beech. The weight of the hammer allows a single unit of force (slightly more than gravity) to set the wedge and make fine adjustments. You do not need to swing it, just tap.

This well balanced hammer is perfect for adjusting my planes and any wooden plane. The beech face will not scar the beech wedge when striking the plane’s finial to set the wedge. The brass head is softer than the steel tangs. This means that the mushrooming of the tang will be minimized with significant use.

The shape of the head allows easy setting of bench plane wedges. Its shape is utilitarian.

These plane hammers are made entirely in-house by Thaddeus Bickford. He milled the brass. He polished the brass. He shaped the handle.

NOTE: The downside of the softer brass head is that it will become superficially scarred. The beautiful polish will not remain unscathed.
